Supporting Literacy Improvement in Indonesia, BRI Danareksa Sekuritas Build Reading Hut
Data from UNESCO states that Indonesia ranks second from the bottom in terms of world literacy with an interest in reading of Indonesian people only 0.001%, which means that out of 1,000 Indonesians, only 1 person is an avid reader.
As an effort to support a sustainable increase in literacy and education in Indonesia, BRI Danareksa Sekuritas (“BRIDS”) through the "BRIDS Peduli" Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) program inaugurated the construction of a reading hut for people in need in Cijayanti Village, Bogor, West Java, attended by all BRIDS Directors and regional officials.
The construction of this reading hut is the result of a collaboration with a local literacy community called the Taman Baca Masyarakat (TBM) Bale Baca Cijayanti, a community founded by a group of local youth since 2019, focused on increasing literacy and community development, for children and adolescents aged 3-17 years.
Apart from building proper and comfortable reading huts for teaching and learning activities, at this inauguration, BRIDS also made donations in the form of educational equipment and book donations and involved around 40 employees to interact with children at TBM, with the aim of increasing self-confidence, improve communication, and have high dreams.
President Director of BRIDS Laksono Widodo revealed that the construction of this saung was carried out in the framework of the Company's 31st Anniversary with the aim of providing added value to the community, as well as to meet the need for a proper, comfortable place to study and be able to meet the learning enthusiasm of around 150 beneficiary children in Cijayanti Village.
"We hope that the construction of this reading room can increase the enthusiasm and comfort of the younger siblings while studying, and can improve the quality of education in Cijayanti Village in a sustainable manner so that the younger siblings can realize their dreams," said Laksono.
The person in charge of TBM Bale Baca Cijayanti Dwi Sulistia Ningsih said that the new reading room is beneficial for children's learning activities because the existing space has not been sufficient for children.
"The New Learning Center established at TBM Bale Baca Cijayanti has made the people of Cijayanti Village have a 'new ship' to prepare and deliver their children to achieve their dreams. Thank you CSR BRI Danareksa Sekuritas for your attention and seriousness towards education.” Dwi added.
In this activity, BRIDS is supported by Indorelawan, an online-based non-profit organization that brings together social organizations and volunteers. Quoted from its website, Indorelawan has helped around 270 thousand volunteers and 6000 organizations to carry out more than 8000 activities.
Throughout 2023, BRIDS has carried out several CSR activities that focus on providing added value, especially to society and the environment. "BRI Danareksa is committed to supporting the improvement of education throughout Indonesia through the BRIDS Cares CSR program which consists of activities that have a sustainable impact like today's activities," concluded Laksono.
